The Green Canvas
A foundational commitment to channel all proceeds from art sales into ecological restoration, beginning with the ancient woodlands of Fingle Woods, Devon.
The Green Canvas is the living embodiment of my manifesto's first rule: Art for Earth's Sake. This is not a project, but a permanent commitment to use 100% of the proceeds from the sale of my artworks and public works for direct ecological action. The initiative operates at a symbolic frequency of 7.83 Hz, the Schumann Resonance, which is considered the Earth's fundamental heartbeat. As 1 core commitment, its first focus is to support local, small-scale climate initiatives in England—the country that has given me a home and a voice. The inaugural beneficiary will be the restoration of Fingle Woods in Devon, helping to bring an ancient temperate rainforest back to life.
Fingle Woods Overview
Fingle Woods is an 825-acre ancient woodland located in the Teign Valley, on the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park in Devon, along the southern bank of the River Teign, downstream of Fingle Bridge.
In 2013, the National Trust and Woodland Trust acquired the site to restore it for wildlife and enhance public access.
Fingle Restoration Efforts
The restoration plan focuses on rehabilitating the ancient woodland, previously affected by non-native conifers, to return it to its original state.
This extensive process will span over 200 years, marking one of the largest woodland restoration initiatives in the UK.
With only two percent of the UK's woodlands classified as ancient, restoring areas like Fingle is vital for the long-term survival of native species.
Wildlife in Fingle Woods
The unspoiled areas of Fingle Woods boast a rich variety of wildlife.
In early spring, wild daffodils bloom, followed by bluebells in early summer, creating a vibrant display throughout the dappled woodland.
Bird species such as redstarts and wood warblers can be seen along the woodland edges, while pied flycatchers search for insects in the mature undergrowth. Wetland species thrive in the fertile regions along the River Teign.
